The chapel is named after Saint Radegund, a pious maidservant from the 13th century who was killed by wolves on her way home from a leper house where she cared for the sick. A large church was later built on the site of her burial, which is now represented by the small chapel. The chapel is part of a historic pilgrimage site that dates back to the veneration of Saint Radegund.

Stadtbergen and the Japanese prefecture of Fukushima have enjoyed a close friendship since 1974. This partnership has been maintained through regular delegation visits and cultural exchanges. In 2024, both cities celebrated the 50th anniversary of their connection with a variety of events.  After the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, the city of Stadtbergen organized several commemorative events to commemorate the events and show its solidarity with the people of Fukushima. For example, on March 11, 2023, a vigil was held on the anniversary of the disaster, in which the German Nature Conservation Association was involved, among others.  The long-standing friendship between Stadtbergen and Fukushima was established in 1974 by a visit by 29 Japanese to Stadtbergen. Since then, numerous delegations and cultural exchange programs have strengthened the connection between the two regions.  In September 2024, the city of Stadtbergen held a Japan Day in the community hall under the motto “Japan - discover, experience, live” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of friendship with Fukushima. The program included various cultural performances and activities that brought Japanese culture closer to the citizens.  These ongoing efforts underline the deep bond between Stadtbergen and Fukushima, which continues to this day despite the geographical distance and the challenges of the past.
