The Hauptstadtbach is one of the most important canals in Augsburg's water management system – a true centerpiece of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. 💧 It branches off from the Lech River at the Hochablass, where the water is diverted over the historic barrage. From this point, it feeds several other streams, including the Neubach, the Bauhofbach, and the Proviantbach. These canals carry the Lech water further into the city and feed Augsburg's extensive network of waterways. The Hauptstadtbach was created in the Middle Ages to provide hydropower for mills and drinking water for the city. It was, in a sense, the "main conduit" for the city's water distribution – hence its name. Today, it flows peacefully through the Siebentischwald Forest and, with its tributaries, forms one of Augsburg's most beautiful running and walking routes – a quiet, clear testament to centuries of engineering and sustainable urban planning. 🌿

The Hauptstadtbach is one of the most important artificial canals in Augsburg's historic water system. It is fed from the Lech River via the Hochablass weir and serves, among other things, as a tributary to the Augsburg Canoe Course, also known as the Ice Canal.

The Neubach branches off from the Hauptstadtbach, which in turn receives water from the Lech at the Hochablass weir. The Neubach flows through the Siebentischwald forest and later flows back into the Hauptstadtbach. These waterways form a complex system that has been used for both water supply and energy generation. Augsburg's first modern waterworks, the Hochablass waterworks, was built on the Neubach. It went into operation in 1879 and replaced older supply systems to provide the city with hygienic drinking water. Today, the former waterworks serves as a technology museum and hydroelectric power station. Parts of the Neubach are used for canoeing. The Olympic canoe course, built for the 1972 Games, is fed by the Hauptstadtbach, into which the Neubach flows. This course is a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts and is regularly used for competitions.
