In the smallest city in the world, the colorful K-dolls (giant dolls) give us a warm welcome. Streets, alleys and squares are filled with culinary bon vivants and sweet tooths. Wout Bru - Chef enjoys sitting on his terrace while his cash register rings. Delicious vapors whirl down in the old meander of the Ourthe. In the narrow alleys, people cling to each other to catch a glimpse of the gingerbread house Désirée Durbuy. Roger Van Damme has taken up residence at his gate and slowly admits sweet tooths in his 'Chocolate Factory'. In all this bustle Marc Coucke (entrepreneur – multimillionaire) tries to lure the flow of people to his tourist train with 'biscuits'. Unfortunately, his honeyed talk is not for us. It's getting too busy for us, the fence is off the dam. Understanding Roger nods, Wout swallows and Marc, who feels like a king, we leave behind at 'his Boudewijnpark'. Along the old meander we quickly look for other and higher spheres. Enough 2.0 Durbuy legends undergone.
At dusk, strolling along the Ourthe, we finally find our steel carriage at the foot of the spotlight shrouded castle from 889. The historic city sparkles day and night. This is Durbuy 2.0. After musing on a couch, while the large crowd sits down at festive disses, we enjoy our aperitif. Night has fallen, silence returns to the streets. Holidaymakers and day trippers return home. Wout and Roger beckon us…
A culinary experience caresses our tongue. The goodies are washed down with spirits of grape juice. And Marc has still saved a delicious cookie for the dessert pallet. At low tide or under normal conditions, the Isbelle flow disappears at the first fault line for about 50m in a series of small and scattered sinkholes in the riverbed. This
are too small to be physically examined by humans. The water permanently feeds a “resurgence” or “karst spring” called “Fontaine de Thot”. In this place, just at the foot of the chalet of the “Spéléo Club de Belgique”, the water resurfaces before it flows into the Ourthe at the end of the Isbelle valley.
In a swollen river or after a thunderstorm, we can observe a saturation process and the water partly continues to the surface in the bed of the Isbelle, only then to submerge in the series of sinkholes of the second fault line. The water from these sinkholes feeds the second, but not permanent “karst source” of the Isbelle, about 100m from the bridge called “Pont des Gattes”.

Arduenna Experience starts.
On the way to the Devil's Bed we walk along quiet meadows.
We carefully approach the empty Devil's Bed. Rolf reassures us and tells us the interesting legend of the Devil's Bed. Fascinated by sagas, myths and legends we quickly reach a higher level. On the short but tough climb to the white menhir 'Pierre Haina' we feel in our legs that we are entering holy ground or has our lactic acid gone into the red.
On trembling legs we listen to Midsummer Night's stories and the petrification of the primeval ancestor 'Pierre Haina'. In the past, before the arrival of imposed Christianity, the white menhir was whitewashed twice a year by our ancestors. As a result, the Pierre Haina became an important sight in the valley. The white menhir was and is the centre of the pagan megalithic system. Before we leave this legendary place, we quickly make a silent wish at the mythical ‘Wishing Tree’.
In the company of imaginary fairies, we walk on clouds through the hedgerow landscape along the Dolmen of Wéris and d'Oppange. Here we hear fascinating stories about the soul hole and the 29 human sacrifices that are buried here.
Respectfully we cross ‘Carrefour de Sorcier’. According to tradition, important measurements of druids are said to have taken place at the ‘Wizard’s Crossroads’. We greet the lonely 3.60 metre high menhir Danthine. It stands here all alone in the landscape. According to our guide, the menhir is not in its place. Originally it stood somewhere in the “Field of the Long Stone”. However, it is now a landmark in the wide area along the Barvaux-Erezée road. Which archaeologist 2.0 can find his ‘roots’.
The horizon is starting to turn orange. The Devil can appear in the landscape at any moment.
Time to safely return to the rural village with its beautifully restored limestone and sandstone half-timbered houses.
At the ‘Puddingsteen’ we enjoy this unique prehistoric place with its many legends, sagas and myths.
Darkness has entered, time to say goodbye to the ‘five thousand year’ old pagan calendar.

A beautiful bridge with a view of the castle

On the side of the bridge, you'll find a four-language (FR/NL/DE/UK) information board with the information about the bridge Herwig mentions. It could use replacing. Other interesting facts about the bridge with visible remains: the metal cross, surmounted by a cast and painted iron statue of Christ on the railing, dates from the eighteenth century. As mentioned, the limestone base inscribes the construction years of the various successive bridges: 1725, 1909, and 1954. The base of the cross itself has also been replaced. The previous one, also part of the city's small heritage, stands on the side of the church next to the old graves. This stone stood there between 1909 and 1940 and was blown up during the war. It was replaced in 1954, just like the bridge. If you go down the stairs towards the parking lot on the other side of the bridge (the side with the information board), you will see another reminder, remains and information about the mill.

At approximately 37 meters, the top of the Anticline, also known as the Homalius Rock and especially the Falize Rock, is literally the highest point in Durbuy. It has been a highlight for many visitors for years, thanks in part to the surroundings and beautiful water features. The rock is somewhat older than the average visitor. It's said to be more than 300 million years old. However, the rock layers are much older: around 375 million years old. The name Anticline comes from the geological phenomenon known as an anticline. It's the opposite of a syncline. While the former is a fold formed over many years, with the innermost layers being the oldest and the folds running downwards, synclines have folds running downwards. Such folds can form for various reasons and range from very small to large, as seen here. Originally, everything was, of course, horizontal. The inverted U-shape created by uplift in Durbuy is not only beautiful to see but also special. And Durbuy has beautifully highlighted this. Another beautiful anticline can be found in Han-sur-Lesse, also in the Famenne-Ardenne region, albeit in the province of Namur (here we are in Luxembourg), where it has been given the name "Tête de bouc" (Tick of the Rock). There's a waterfall and a large water feature at the end of the expansive pond in front of the rock, which you can also climb. And everywhere there's space to admire it all while sitting and relaxing—or enjoying the water. Don't forget the many smaller works of art and curiosities, and take a look in the water.
