The station, located at an altitude of 429 meters above sea level, was opened on June 29, 1902, along with the newly constructed line from Sondrio. The placement of the station building on the side was a preliminary construction step for the then-planned but never-realized extension towards Bormio, the so-called Ortler Railway. Since July 1, 1908, Tirano has also served as a transfer station to the Bernina Railway. At that time, the RhB built its own station building on the forecourt of the Italian station. Passenger traffic on the Italian line is now handled by Trenord. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahnhof_Tirano

Tirano is a small Italian town at the entrance to the Veltins mountain range near the Swiss border and is known as the terminus of the Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is home to the Madonna di Tirano pilgrimage church, a stunning 16th-century basilica. Tirano boasts a picturesque old town with stately homes, a medieval city wall, and is a center for local culinary delights and wine tastings.

On the Alpe, there are two stone vaults that serve as natural refrigerators. The owner explained to us that the left cellar is about 200 years old, while the right one was built by him and his family only a few years ago. These cellars consist of a three-layered "false" vault. In the inner vault, the stones are slightly sloped outward to prevent rainwater from entering the cellar. Between this vault and the outer vault is a layer of large pebbles that acts as a thermal barrier to prevent sunlight from heating the inner layer. Cooling is provided by the spring water that flows through the cellar.

The Refugio San Romerio is a charming overnight stop on the Via Valtellina. We had a delicious meal there (homemade pizzoccheri) and a good night's sleep.

Ferrovia Retica RhB, Tirano (Bernina Railway) Fascinatingly different since 1889 1910 Opening of the St. Moritz – Tirano line (Bernina Railway) With our unique mountain routes, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Glacier Express and Bernina Express, we have been guaranteeing fascinating rail experiences across Graubünden since 1889. Our world-famous railway has become an integral part of one of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland. What began in 1889 with the opening of the route from Landquart to Klosters is now a 385 kilometer long route network in the middle of the Swiss high mountains. Harmoniously embedded in the wild nature, the railway lines and artificial buildings contribute to the charm of Graubünden. In 1888, Grisons railway pioneers realized their idea of a mountain railway. At the initiative of the Dutchman Willem-Jan Holsboer, they founded the Landquart-Davos AG narrow-gauge railway. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the same year and the Landquart – Klosters railway line was opened in 1889. The first steam trains ran from Landquart to Davos as early as 1890. The routes to St. Moritz, Disentis and Scuol-Tarasp were later added. Thanks to the mergers with the Arosa and Bernina Railways, the route network expanded. 11월 22, 2023, Chiesa di Santa Perpetua di Tirano
The thousand-year-old church of Santa Perpetua is located on a natural balcony overlooking Tirano. For hundreds of years the church was a central point of passage between the Rhine and Inn valleys with Valtellina and Val Camonica, then with the Po plain and the Mediterranean. Next to the sacred building, the remains of a xenodochio, a hostel for travelers and pilgrims, are still visible.

The church of Santa Perpetua is a walking place for the Tiranesi people, but also very suitable for those who go mountain biking. There are benches, lawns and a fountain, making it a great stopover point to admire Tirano and its surroundings.

Resting on a bench, wall or lawn you can rest from the climb and enjoy the magnificent view of Tirano, perhaps after quenching your thirst at the fountain.
