The Gail River is an important tributary in southern Austria, flowing through Carinthia. It originates in the Gailtal Alps and flows primarily through the area around the Gail Valley before flowing into the Drava River south of Villach. The Gail River's water flow varies greatly with the seasons: in spring and autumn, it carries more water, while warmer months often result in lower water levels. The Gail River significantly shapes the landscape and local life. Nature reserves, wetlands, and floodplain landscapes, which are home to a high level of biodiversity, extend along the river. The region is popular with walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers; hiking trails and the recreational activities developed along the Gail River invite exploration. The Gail River plays an important economic role, primarily in tourism, agriculture, and hydropower. Small communities along the river benefit from tourism, while hydroelectric power plants contribute to the regional energy supply. Overall, the Gail is a characteristic, natural river section in Carinthia that combines nature, recreation and regional development.

A brilliant cycle path – although the tunnels can sometimes be quite damp, foggy, and chilly in the mornings. A welcome change on hot summer days like my tour at the end of June 2025!
