The Roda di Vaèl refuge is located 2,283 meters above sea level on the Ciampaz saddle, in the heart of the Catinaccio and Rosengarten group, among the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. It is one of the reference refuges for the Catinaccio group and, after being expanded and updated, it was dedicated to Marino Stenico, one of the most important climbers in the history of Dolomite mountaineering, as well as the founder of Trentino mountaineers.

Very nice mountain hut with a very good gastronomy

Nice alpine restaurant which invites you to linger with the large terrace. The food and drink menu is large and the food is excellent. With a bit of luck, the music will play. Ideal as a stop approx. in the middle of the circular route from the Völser Weiher car park to the Tuffalm and straight down again.

The Rotwandhütte is also called the Ostertag-Hütte. The staff is very friendly and the menu is based on regional cuisine. Warm kitchen non-stop from 10.00 a.m. to 6.45 p.m.

It is worth seeing the sunrise from the rock spur to the right of the refuge

The initiative to build the hut goes back to a meeting of the Karersee-Welschnofen section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club. The first attempts to acquire land from the municipality of Vigo date back to 1899. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the spring of 1906 and in August of the same year the hut was opened with a capacity of 20 overnight accommodations. In addition to local tourism pioneer Theodor Christomannos, sponsors included German industrialist Karl von Ostertag-Siegle, after which the hut was eventually named. In 1921 the hut was entrusted by the Italian military to the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), the largest branch of the CAI, which gave it the Italian name Rifugio Roda di Vaèl. From 1983 a new construction took place, during which, among other things, the capacity of the shelter was expanded. The new building was inaugurated in 1986.
