The three-story Renaissance building of the historic town hall, with its over 57-meter-high tower and leaning windows, is an iconic sight on the market square. The magnificent main portal on the market side depicts the coats of arms of Reuss and Solms, as well as the former three-man council of Gera's mayors. Not far from the portal, the historic pillory from 1754 can still be seen today. The octagonal town hall tower has adorned the market square since the 16th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the watchman's room was occupied by the watchman, who was appointed by the city to report fires. Today, the town hall tower is open to the public. A magnificent 360-degree panoramic view awaits visitors after climbing 163 steps from the 34-meter-high platform. A hand-played carrilon has sounded from the tower lantern since 1988. The carillon is very popular in Gera. https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/rathaus

The biblical figure of Samson adorns the fountain in the heart of the city. Samson, depicted here as a lion tamer, embodies the strength of the city of Gera with his indomitable power. The Samson Fountain was originally created in 1685 by Casper Junghans the Elder of Rochlitz from Falka sandstone. For almost 140 years, it was initially located in a corner of the market square and used for drinking and domestic water. Just a few years after its relocation to the center of the market square, the fountain and its figure were severely damaged by a storm and required renovation. This was made possible by donations from the population of the then prosperous industrial city. A new version was created using Lower Franconian shell limestone by master sculptors Ewald and Rudolf Tympel, as well as Fritz Kröner, Otto Oettel, and Otto Hager. But the figure was replaced a third time: in 1979 by the Gera artist and sculptor Heinz Plath. He worked with Posta hard sandstone. https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/simsonbrunnen

Next to the town hall, another Renaissance building flanks Gera's historic market square: The City Pharmacy. With its richly decorated bay window, it is one of the most impressive buildings in the city center. From 1847 onwards, the building was used as a pharmacy. The traditional City Pharmacy is still located on the ground floor today. The Gera Art Association organizes changing exhibitions on the upper floor. Under the City Pharmacy are two of Gera's caves dating back to 1712. Even then, the deep cellars had the ideal temperature for storing tinctures, cod liver oil, and juices. https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/stadtapotheke

St. Salvator Church in Gera is one of the city's most important churches, known for its special combination of Baroque exterior architecture and impressive Art Nouveau interior. It is located on the Nicolaiberg in the center of Gera. The Baroque building was quickly rebuilt after the great city fire of 1780. The church received its current unique Art Nouveau furnishings during a renovation in 1903, making it one of the few churches in Europe with such a cohesive Art Nouveau ensemble. The Baroque exterior shell provides a charming contrast to the church's interior. The Art Nouveau furnishings, characterized by floral forms and an ornate altar-pulpit arrangement, are particularly worth seeing. A staircase, built at the end of the 19th century, leads impressively up to the church. The church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran City Church of Gera and is used for services as well as concerts and cultural events.
