There is evidence of Hermsdorf from the year 1173. At a secret court meeting, which, given the circumstances, could only have taken place in the later inn "Zum Schwarzen Bär" in 1173, Emperor Frederick I ("Barbarossa") deposed the King of Bohemia from his position. Hermsdorf was also mentioned in documents in 1256. The abundance of wood and the convenient location favored the development of the town. In 1826, the town, along with the southern part of the Eisenberg district office and the town of Eisenberg, passed from the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg to the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg. From 1920, it belonged to the Free State of Thuringia. Industrial development began with the construction of the Weimar-Gera railway line in 1872/76. The construction of the motorway junction of today's A9 and A4 motorways in the 1930s brought further improvements to the infrastructure.
