Crossing with starting point of various trails for all disciplines

The Ugione torrent is a modest stream, barely 15 km long, with a torrential regime, poor in water during summer and winter, rich during autumn and spring. It has its source in the "Valle Benedetta" at 400 m. of altitude and in the first part it descends steeply forming here and there small waterfalls; one of these, Cascata dell’Infernaccio (coord. 43.55875; 10.40232), accessible by means of a wooded footpath, is particularly suggestive: about ten meters high, it is surrounded by vegetation and feeds a small pond. Along its upper course Ugione shows traces of human activity and settlements over time: some old farms, the remains of a water mill, the so-called ice-houses and the Sambuca hermitage. Reached the plain, the stream flows to the outskirts of Livorno and finally into the sea at the industrial port. The entire upper course of the stream is particularly suitable for trekking and mountbiking, using the road (mainly dirt and full of detours and side paths) that from the sp 4 (via delle Sorgenti, coord. 43.565424, 10.391042) leads up to the village of Valle Benedetta (43.522970, 10.415446), on the top. You can reach by bus both the starting point and the arrival point of the route.
