The village of Castagneto Carducci is located on a hill 188 meters above sea level and offers a wonderful view.

The ancient village was born as Castagneto Marittimo and in 1907 changed its name to Castagneto Carducci, in honor of the famous poet Giosuè Carducci, who spent his childhood in this land.

The town was founded in the first half of the 19th century, when Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca founded a number of settlements, mostly made up of farmhouses. Donoratico began to develop in 1863, when the Livorno-Follonica railway line was opened and the Bambolo station was built, which, at the request of the Counts of Della Gherardesca, was not located in the town of the same name, but next to their Mandriacce estate, around which the centre of Donoratico soon grew.

The area is no longer accessible to visitors. It is completely fenced off and closed. The visitor centre is no longer maintained.

The Via Campigliese is a historic road that connected Castagneto to Campiglia Marittima, among forests of holm oaks and cork trees, overlooking the sea. Wayfarers, traders, pilgrims have traveled this route; even today a stretch of this suggestive road has the original pavement.
