The Hangeiche is located in the middle of the Schustersteig in the Uhlstädter Heide. It served as the court of the abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Saalfeld. Today, a rope and noose illustrate what must have happened here back then.

Right next to the cycle path is the confluence of the Orla and Saale. There is a small hut with a table and two benches with space for about 6-8 cyclists (or hikers).

The forest of wild grazing animals offers, with a little luck, a rare opportunity to see Taurus cattle in their natural habitat. The hiking and cycling trails lead through a unique forest area where these animals shape the landscape and promote natural forest development. A must for nature lovers who want to experience real wilderness up close.

It takes a lot of time. Although there were only a few guests, I waited 45 minutes for an ice cream sundae. Drinks came a little quicker.

The trail is really fun. But not suitable for inexperienced hikers. If you fall, it goes steeply downhill and into the Saale.

The Orla is about 35 km long and flows into the Saale here at this well-maintained place.

At the Krötenpfütze there are some very informative information boards and some good signposts in the middle of the forest. A beautiful winding gravel driveway from Birkigt leads to the Krötenpfütze. The wonderful, lonely descent to the north via Friederbach into the Saale valley begins here.
