The first mention of a chapel in present-day Kleinlöbichau can be found in a document from 1353. This chapel had apparently fallen into disrepair by the 17th century. During the Duchy of Saxe-Jena (1672-1690), the then Duke Bernhard had the present church in Kleinlöbichau built within a few weeks in 1675, presumably as a token of thanks for the birth of his son. The building materials came from the dilapidated Thalbürgel Abbey, as can still be seen today. The church was consecrated on October 17, 1675, in the presence of the Duke.
