After years of apprenticeship and travel in Germany, Paris, Italy and Russia, the expressionist artist settled in Güstrow at the age of 40 in 1910. The internationally respected artist lived and worked in this city for almost 30 years. Since 1953 the works of his extensive oeuvre have been shown in the Gertrudenkapelle and since 1978 also in his studio on the Inselsee. In 1998, an exhibition forum was opened next to the studio building, a new museum building that complements the personal museums of the Ernst Barlach Foundation with special exhibitions.
