Originally, the Gat van de Visschen continued to follow a westerly course, eventually ending in the Hollandsch Diep. During the construction of the Nieuwe Merwede, a stretch dam was constructed from the Deeneplaat to the Anna Jacominaplaat (commonly called the Jacomien), which is at right angles to the flow direction of the Gat van de Visschen. In 2020, this dam forms the separation between the Gat van de Visschen and the Nieuwe Merwede. The original flow direction of the Gat van de Visschen is still recognizable.

The Gat van de Visschen is an important waterway in the Brabantse Biesbosch. The very wide creek is sometimes divided by two islands (which are connected by a large sand bar) into a Noordergat van de Visschen and a Zuidergat van de Visschen. The beginning of the Gat van de Visschen is formed by the confluence of two wide creeks, both of which are part of a network of wide (natural) waterways for pleasure craft (namely the Gat van Van Kampen, itself the continuation of the Gat van de Noorderklip, and the Gat van den Kleinen Kil, itself the continuation of the Gat van den Hardenhoek). Eventually, the Gat van de Visschen flows southwards, to join the river Amer, not far from the point where it flows into the Hollandsch Diep.
