The nave of the three-nave gothic, brick hall church with four spans was built in the second half of the 14th century. The single-nave chancel with a pentagonal end comes from the 15th century and shows decorative forms of churches from the Hinrich Brunsberg school. From 1886 to 1915 Hermann Petrich was the chief preacher and superintendent at St. Stephen's. The church burned down to the surrounding walls around April 20-23, 1945. However, the stellar vaults of the choir have survived, thanks to which the choir was re-roofed and separated from the nave until 1953. Funded by the East German church building program, the adjacent western bay of the nave was enlarged to two floors between 1982 and 1987 and separated from the rest of the nave, which is still in ruins.
