After the old nave was demolished in 1737, the current one was rebuilt, and the church was consecrated in 1743. Opposite the pulpit is a crucifix from the mid-18th century. The coat of arms of Abbot Rogerius Friesl of Kaisheim can be seen on the west gable. A cemetery surrounds the parish church. Between 1776 and 1777, a new building was constructed in the early neoclassical style under the direction of the prince-bishop's court architect Johann Martin Pentenrieder, which involved the extensive demolition of the previous building. Only the square tower substructure and the nave foundations were retained from the old church.

At Augsburg Cathedral is the so-called “Roman Wall”, a display of Roman stone monuments that recalls Augsburg’s ancient past as Augusta Vindelicum. This wall was built in the mid-20th century to display Roman inscription stones that were discovered during excavations in the nearby Fronhof. Originally, the original stones were displayed on the wall. However, weather and vandalism took their toll on the stones, so around the year 2000 it was decided to protect the originals and replace them with casts. Today, casts of honorary inscriptions, architectural elements such as capitals and column bases, and building inscriptions can be seen on the Roman Wall. These pieces were mostly found by chance and cannot be assigned to any specific building. Some of the stones on display provide insights into the religious life of the Roman city, including votive stones and various grave monuments. An outstanding example is the almost seven-meter-high tomb of Marcus Aurelius Carus from around 180/200 AD, which illustrates the economic life of the provincial capital at the time. Next to the Roman wall, on the cathedral forecourt there is the so-called “archaeological window”, which shows the foundations of St. John's Church, which were uncovered at the beginning of the 20th century. The pavement also shows structures of Roman buildings underneath. However, more detailed explanations are currently lacking because the information boards have been removed. These presentations offer visitors to Augsburg Cathedral the opportunity to experience the city's Roman history first-hand and explore the archaeological evidence of the past.
