At the northern end of the Wolfzahnau, the Wertach River flows into the Lech River. The Lech and Wertach rivers converge in the Wolfzahnau – a landscape conservation area within the city of Augsburg, located on the western bank of the Lech River. The Lech carries greenish water, while the Wertach carries brownish water.

The 256 km long river originates in Vorarlberg in the Hochtannberg region at the confluence of the Spullerbach and Formarinbach streams in the Tannläger valley. It flows through Tyrol and southern Bavaria, where it empties into the Danube. The Hercules Fountain was modeled by Adriaen de Vries between 1597 and 1600, then cast by Wolfgang Neidhardt in Augsburg, and erected in 1602 on the Weinmarkt in front of the Siegelhaus and the Fugger Houses. Until 1809, a complex of buildings stood south of the fountain in the middle of today's Maximilianstraße, extending to Ulrichsplatz and aligning with the facade of the Siegelhaus toward the Hercules Fountain.

Along with the Mercury Fountain, it is one of the greatest works the artist ever created. The hero Hercules slays the Hydra, a multi-headed water serpent. The Wellenburger Allee is an impressive linden tree avenue in the south of Augsburg. It stretches over two kilometers from the Wertach Bridge in the Göggingen district to Wellenburg Castle. With over 350 winter linden trees, it forms a striking visual axis and underlines the historical significance of the castle. The first trees were planted in 1840, more followed between 1880 and 1920. The avenue has been a nature reserve since 1975. A storm in June 2013 damaged numerous trees, but they were replanted. Today, the Wellenburger Allee is a popular destination for walks and bike rides. It connects urban areas with the rural charm of Wellenburg Castle and offers a green oasis for those seeking relaxation.
