In earlier times, fresh and salt water flowed together in the Lauwerszee. Fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam in 1969. A beautiful new landscape emerged on the former seabed, a true bird paradise. The nature in the Lauwersmeer is so unique that the area has been designated a National Park. Visitors are welcome day and night.

The story of the 21 "witches" sentenced to death touched me. When I look at the suffering of civilians in Ukraine and Palestine, not everything has changed for the better in the last 400 years.

On a modest hill between Wedde and Wessinghuizen lies the Giezelbaarg, a place with a dark history. At the end of the 16th century, at least 21 alleged witches were burned at the stake here, a tragic result of fear and suspicion. Today, a memorial stone commemorates this time and the landscape invites you to contemplate. A historical place that makes you quiet and makes you think.

Only dolmen that can still be found "in the wild" in the province of Groningen. The most Northern dolmen on the Hondsrug. Slightly more South, in Midlaren, are D3 and D4 in Drenthe. Both along the Pieterpad.

The front cover stone is so large and massive that I am always amazed at how they managed to do this back then.
