A quiet and pleasant path

Only dolmen that can still be found "in the wild" in the province of Groningen. The most Northern dolmen on the Hondsrug. Slightly more South, in Midlaren, are D3 and D4 in Drenthe. Both along the Pieterpad.

The front cover stone is so large and massive that I am always amazed at how they managed to do this back then.

This is one of two dolmens in Groningen. The other one is in a museum in Delfzijl.

The wooden Biesterwied lookout tower offers a beautiful view over the reed marsh of Tetjehorn and the Schildmeer. At a height of six meters you can spot rare birds, deer and foxes in this peaceful nature reserve. Popular with bird and nature lovers, this tower is an ideal place to experience the rich biodiversity of 't Roegwold.

Special place and a special history.

Just outside Noordlaren you will find the northernmost dolmen in the Netherlands: Hunebed G1. What is also special is that this is the only Groningen dolmen that is still located in its original location. The Dolmens in Groningen and Drenthe date from the time of the Neolithic Funnel Beaker culture (ca. 3450 and ca. 3250 BC). The dolmen was originally covered by earth and was much larger in size. It also contained a keystone, two pairs of gate stones, probably a gate stone, five pairs of side stones and an equal number of stones. It is remarkable that the gate faced west, and that two silhouettes of children were found in front of the gate.
