The famous park, known for the festivals Noorderzon and Noorderslag.
Noorderplantsoen is a park in the Dutch city of Groningen, enclosed by Oranjewijk, Noorderplantsoenbuurt and Hortusbuurt. The park is located on the site where the town's ramparts were built in the 17th century and was opened in 1880. The canals have been replaced by four ponds and where the ramparts stood, there is now an English-style park with height differences. The Noorderplantsoen was designated in its entirety as a national monument in 1971. The pavilion and the music dome are also protected as a national monument. Every year a number of events take place in the Noorderplantsoen, of which Noorderzon is perhaps the best known. This is a theater and dance event held at the end of August. Many dance, theater and music groups from home and abroad often show surprising performances during this 11-day festival. Another well-known event in the Noorderplantsoen is the park run in which approximately 2500-3000 people participate annually. The walk through the park is held annually on the first Saturday of November.
