The lake was created in the early 1960s during the construction of federal autobahn 1. Sand was mined there until 1966. After the end of sand extraction, a campsite was set up around the lake, which was already being used as a bathing lake during the quarrying activities in the summer months. The lake, which is located in an agricultural area, is managed by the operator of the campsite. Sanitary facilities, a restaurant and a snack bar are available.
