9월 4, 2025, Wasserturm Havelberg

The water tower is located in Havelberg's cathedral district and can be reached from the cathedral in just a few minutes on foot. It was built from red bricks in 1890 and rebuilt in 1933. Above the entrance, in addition to these dates, you can find Havelberg's coat of arms. Since the entry into force of the Saxony-Anhalt Monument Protection Act on October 21, 1991, it has been officially registered as a cultural monument. Originally, the tower served as a water reservoir for the city. In the early 2000s, the water supply was converted to deep wells and pumping systems, which led to the reservoir being taken out of service. Today, a restaurant (tower café and bistro) is located directly next to the tower, while the tower itself is no longer used for any functional purpose.

On the cathedral square, two impressive gentlemen are deep in conversation: Tsar Peter I and King Friedrich Wilhelm I have been commemorating a historic event since 2015. In Havelberg, the legendary Amber Room symbolically changed hands in 1716. In return, the Prussian king received a squad of grenadiers from the Russian tsar, the king's bodyguards, who became known as the “Long Guys”.

Nice place at the entrance to the forest. There is also a well-located rest area with tables and benches directly at the waterfall.

There are a lot of steps...I didn't count them but it's worth going up the stairs. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with fantastic views.

The Havelberg water tower was built in 1890 as a brick building according to plans by the Havelberg master mason Fritz Broder and the master carpenter Pastor. The tower was rebuilt in 1933 and got its current height of 34.50 m. It served as a water reservoir until the beginning of the 2000s. Then the water was supplied from deep wells with appropriate pumping systems. Nowadays there is a restaurant on the tower, while the tower itself is not used. In accordance with the Monument Protection Act of the State of Saxony-Anhalt of October 21, 1991, the water tower was entered as a cultural monument in the state's monument register. The tower is located on the corner of Karl-Liebknecht-Str./Cotheniusstraße opposite the cathedral cemetery. https://www.goruma.de/staedte/havelberg/sehenswuerdheiten

Two imposing gentlemen are deep in conversation on the cathedral square: Tsar Peter I and King Friedrich Wilhelm I have been commemorating a historic event since 2015. The legendary Amber Room in Havelberg symbolically changed hands in 1716. A little hint: The figures created by the sculptor Anton Schumann contain artistically designed postcards that can be purchased for a 2-euro coin. For those who want to learn a little more about the historical background: In the years 1700 to 1721, the Great Northern War was fought in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, in which an alliance of the Russian Tsarist Empire and the alliances of Saxony-Poland and Denmark-Norway fought with the Swedish Empire for supremacy in the Baltic Sea region. In order to bring about a turning point in this long war, a diplomatic meeting between Tsar Peter I of Russia and the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I, who went down in history as the soldier king, took place from November 13 to 17, 1716 in the royal residence in Havelberg. At such meetings it was customary to exchange gifts. Tsar Peter I received the legendary Amber Room from Friedrich Wilhelm I in addition to a state yacht. It was commissioned by the first Prussian king, Frederick I, and consisted of amber wall coverings. These were originally installed in the Berlin City Palace and, after being donated to Peter I, were in the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg for almost two centuries. From 1942 the Amber Room was exhibited in the Königsberg Palace. It has been considered lost since the end of World War II. In return, the Prussian king received a troop of grenadiers from the Russian tsar, known as the "long fellows", the king's bodyguards. https://www.havelberg.de/en/art-objects.html

The Maria Magdalena Church in Breddin is a single-nave, originally rectangular field stone building with a west transverse tower the width of the ship; the altar was officially consecrated in 1273. In 1847 there was a cross-shaped romanizing extension to the east to a semicircular apse made of field stone with brick edges, enlargement of the nave windows with basket arch and sound openings in the probably Romanesque upper part of the tower. - Interior from the renovation period (around 1847), restored after 1963. For the 2020 permanent exhibition in the church, historical documents were digged deeply. It came to light that the church was consecrated as Maria Magdalena Church in earlier times. The application for renaming was granted, and so the church has recently been officially called "Maria Magdalena Church Breddin". Church history: Parish since 1273, mother church / inspection Havelberg-Dom in 1562, Havelberg superintendent since 1868, Havelberg-Wilsnack parish since 1878, Kyritz-Wusterhausen parish since 1997. Since 2016 church district Prignitz. From 1646 until now (2004) the list of pastors consisted of 18 names without any gaps. The patronage was from 1284 to 1819 with the Havelberg Cathedral Chapter, from 1819 to 1945 with the Treasury (Office Havelberg). Sophiendorf and Kümmernitz were churched in the 19th century. https://www.kirchenkreis-prignitz.de/breddin.html

The border between Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt cuts through the Breddiner Schweiz. On the Brandenburg side, Breddiner Switzerland belongs to the Ostprignitz-Ruppin region. In the small community of Kümmernitz, attentive visitors can spot the sign saying "Wasserfall". The waterfall is hidden in the forest, but with a little sense of direction you can find it quickly. The waterfall is a human-made construction, but it is still worth seeing. A notice board describes it as the highest waterfall of its kind in northern Germany. Whether the water falls or not is decided by the weather conditions and the beavers that live on the Königsfließ. In dry years or when the Nagezahn family has dammed the Königsfließ further up, the waterfall turns into a pathetic trickle. Even if the water doesn't rush into the depths, you don't have to be disappointed as a visitor. A walk along the Königsfließ or a hike through Breddiner Switzerland, which is covered with mighty beeches, is worthwhile at any time of the year. https://brandenburger.land/haben-orte/23-das-koenigsfliess-bei-kuemmernitz.html

Today's listed property was built in 1873 and completed by 1923. But there was already a good at this point. The estate, which had run down due to the socialist era and the upheavals after the fall of the Wall, has been restored since 2007 and is now used on the one hand as a residential building and on the other hand as a building for the non-profit association Rittergut Todtenkopf & Landschaft e.V. with four guest rooms and a hall. https://waldfrieden-bestattung.de/konzept/

The listed chapel from 1905 was renovated once in the 1990s and was set up in 2018 for use as a place of funeral service. The non-profit association operates the burial forest and can use the historical buildings for burials. In the forest there is a place with a cross and seating for the funeral ceremonies directly in the forest. The property's original cemetery was laid out in the forest and is still in use today as a communal cemetery. Around this area, which is enclosed with a wall, the burial forest extends into the open forest area. https://waldfrieden-bestattung.de/konzept/

In the former priory, Tsar Peter I and King Friedrich Wilhelm I signed the Havelberg Convention on November 27, 1716 as part of the anti-Swedish coalition. Favors: The Amber Room and the State Yacht for 200 'Tall Guys' for the Soldier King." The text on the plaque on the former provost at the Havelberg hospital has been a reminder of the visit of both monarchs for many years. The two bronze figures were added to the Buga, which impressively draw attention to themselves on the cathedral square. https://www.havelberg-heimatverein.de/2016/11/tatsachen-und-legenden-zum-zarenbesuch-von-1716/
