The Doorwerth Ice Cellar – a hidden historical gem in the woods During a walk through the dense woods surrounding Doorwerth Castle, you suddenly stumble upon something unexpected: an old ice cellar, half-hidden beneath a moss-covered hill. This 19th-century domed cellar was once used to store blocks of ice in the winter, which were then used to keep food cool in the summer. No electricity, just pure nature. The entrance is often closed with a gate to maintain a stable indoor climate – and also to provide peace and quiet for the bats that now make it their roost. Nevertheless, it's a fascinating place to pause and reflect. The ice cellar is a few minutes' walk from Doorwerth Castle and is easily accessible via winding forest paths. You'll truly be walking through a piece of history, surrounded by tall beech and oak trees.
