The name Slangenburg has nothing to do with snakes, but with the Slingebeek stream that meanders through the landscape here. It was once called the "Slingeburcht," but over time, this was corrupted to Slangenburg. Thus, the estate bears the name of the stream that has been winding its way through here for centuries.

In the middle of the greenery of the Achterhoek lies Kasteel Ruurlo, home to Museum MORE and one of the most atmospheric museums in the Netherlands. In this beautifully restored castle you can admire works by Carel Willink and Fong Leng, among others, surrounded by stylish halls and a picturesque park. The combination of art, architecture and landscape makes a visit special and surprisingly versatile.

The beautiful Ruurlo Castle dates from the 14th century and is surrounded by a beautiful and lively English landscape garden. You can have a drink or a bite to eat in the Orangery with a view of the castle and gardens.

Castle Slangenburg was first mentioned in 1354 as the property of Maes (Thomas) van Baer. In 1585 it was destroyed by the troops of the States General and could only be rebuilt during the Twelve Years' Truce, and in the 17th century the castle became the property of General Frederik Johan van Baer (1645-1713), who rebuilt it for residential purposes. In the 18th century it came into the possession of the Steengracht family, and in 1781 it passed to the Van der Goltz family, who managed it until 1863, before the Van der Goltz heirs sold it in 1895. The last private owners, since 1895 the Passmann family (Herrmann Paßmann), were a German entrepreneur family. The members of this family are buried in the private cemetery behind the car park. After the war, all German property was confiscated and the castle and the buildings within the outer moat became the property of the Dutch state.

Ruurlo Castle is definitely worth getting off your bike for. This imposing historic structure originally dates from the fourteenth century, but its current appearance is largely due to later renovations in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The last major renovation took place in the nineteenth century. Inside you can have a snack and a drink in the adjacent restaurant Oranjerie Ruurlo. The orangery is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am for coffee, lunch and drinks. Time left? Inside you will also find Museum More, a treasure trove for art and heritage.

A beautiful castle with always interesting exhibitions (in addition to the other part of the MORE in Gorssel). There is service in the Orangery, but just sitting in the park is also nice.

Good news, May 2024 update: starting with Pentecost weekend, the cafés and restaurants at the coach house will be open again on weekends. The castle can also be visited on weekends – tickets and more information are available at https://www.kasteelslangenburg.nl/. You can also still visit 't Onland (https://hetonland.nl/). Taverne Edelweiss closed on October 1, 2025. I don't know if new owners will be taking over, and if so, when.
