The tunnel just before Fjordgard was freezing cold in September and barely lit; in some places, water was dripping from the ceiling. It's 3.5 km long, so I was frozen to the bone by the time I reached the end. I knew better on the way back. You should wear a high-visibility vest and put on something warm before entering the tunnel. I put on my full rain gear for the return trip. It's not advisable to stop in the tunnel itself... or only in places where it's a bit wider, as quite a few cars and campers drive through (September 2025).

The toilets and showers were still closed at the beginning of September 2025 due to the beach renovations. I found information on the Ersfjorden website that everything should be ready for the next season, early summer 2026. I've heard that you can see the Northern Lights here.

The toilet and shower are currently (June 1, 2025) closed due to construction, but the forest above offers good opportunities to relieve yourself. Bring a shovel and remember to dig the hole beforehand.

Beautiful view of the waterway that becomes Reisvatnet. It can be covered in snow most of the year, as the photo shows, but it's a beautiful view and cycling area when the snows melt.

The "Bergsbotn utsiktsplattform" is one of the characteristic spots on Senja. The parking lot is very small. It is actually more of a lay-by with space for a handful of cars. A curved platform that winds its way towards the fjord. The platform can be reached "at ground level" with just two steps from the parking lot. Since it then extends several meters out over the edge of the cliff, you suddenly find yourself at a dizzying height and can enjoy a spectacular view of the fjord 🤩

Lilith and Oliver's statements are no longer current. The tunnel is safe to cycle through. Very well lit, wide, with fresh asphalt and a "cyclists in the tunnel" button.

Old tunnel with rough rock walls. Compared to the Lofoten Islands, there is significantly less traffic on Senja and the tunnel is no problem with a bicycle.

Walking along the Mefjord is spectacular in several ways. A few tunnels await you, which have been roughly carved into the rock and seem quite rough and simple by Central European standards. As a cyclist, you can press a button at each entrance and you will then be announced to drivers by flashing signals. The view of the Segla and the Hesten is also spectacular. The two peaks are popular photo opportunities, even Instagram hotspots, and look enormous in real life.

This tunnel is not closed even if the signs say so. You need to wait for a car to guide you through the tunnel. Unfortunately, the bikes need to go in the car of the workman (only 2 bikes fit in the car). And as he has only 1 seat, you'll need to ask another passenger car if you can drive with them through the tunnel. The workman who drove the car was very unfriendly...
