The chapel was built in 1873 in the Byzantine round-arch style, as is common in the Russian Orthodox Church. The Lübeck merchant Nikolaus Johanssen, owner of the Sophienhof estate, commissioned the chapel to be built by the Riga architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829–1909) – modeled on the Russian churches in the Baltics, which he knew from trade relations.
