Here on Dackelweg, behind the dike, is a small holiday home settlement dating back to the 1950s. So there's always plenty to see.

A beautiful singletrack trail leads across the Fernau stream through the salt marshes of the Probstei region, which were once regularly flooded by the Baltic Sea. Unlike many other paths here, it is made of gravel and designed as a singletrack, not concrete slabs. The trail crosses drainage ditches several times, and on one side, old willows form a semi-avenue-like line – ideal for a nature walk or a short bike ride.

At this point you cross the Sandbrücksau (Komoot calls this ‘Lindholmsau’) and reach the former Baltic Sea dike, which today lies inland, more precisely near the salt marshes.

This highlight marks the 1.4 km long path between Barsbek and Wendtorf. Back then, people would say "over the Jordan" if they wanted to go from Barsbek to Wendtorf. Now, they didn't walk to Israel, but simply crossed a fence ditch. Where the "Jordan" once was, there is now a paved path. So, if you want to go to Wendtorf now, the Jordan is no longer an obstacle. Even more natural is the Bottsand nudist beach, just a few hundred meters away, between the bird sanctuary and the Heidkate. The grassland areas in the nature reserve are mown for maintenance and, like the dikes, grazed by cattle and sheep. The nature reserve is managed by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association.[5] It borders the dike to the northwest and the former Barsbek dike to the east. Hiking trails run across the dikes and along the southern border of the nature reserve. Information boards can be found at several locations. The nature reserve is almost entirely surrounded by agricultural land.
