The chapel was built in 1873 in the Byzantine round-arch style, as is common in the Russian Orthodox Church. The Lübeck merchant Nikolaus Johanssen, owner of the Sophienhof estate, had the chapel built by the Riga architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829-1909) - based on the model of the Russian churches in the Baltic States that he knew from trade relations. The Russian church in Baden-Baden also served as a model.

The entrance area of the chapel consists of a vestibule with three open arcade arches, above which the inscriptions "Glory to God in the highest" and "For the wanderer to contemplate" are written. The central building is designed as a cloverleaf choir, over which a dome was built. In the middle of the choir stands a baptismal angel on a marble base, which was created for the chapel by Eduard Lürssen.

In 1962 the chapel became the property of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Preetz

The chapel has belonged to the Preetz parish since 1962. Family coat of arms and the bridal couple Ludwig Nikolaus Johanssen and his wife Johanna, née Voget.
