Historic paths with reminders of the division of Germany

There are beautiful hiking trails here that also commemorate the former border.

The village square, redesigned in 2023, offers cyclists a sheltered area and a total of six charging points for e-bikes. However, you must bring your own charger. While you can lock your bikes here, there is no secure storage (locker) for the charger.

An interesting relic from bygone times

The plaque vividly explains the history of the former village of Leitenhausen. Visitors learn about the history of the former village. During the construction of the border strip, the Leitenhausen residents were also forcibly resettled. A place of remembrance and commemoration of former GDR injustice, how could it be otherwise – right here on the patrol road of the former border.

On the state border near Trappstadt, the Altenburg Castle there and a landwehr fort on the Thuringian side with the Wartberg near Gompertshausen bear witness to the centuries-long border between the two towns. Unfortunately, only remnants of the landwehr remain here, as the former zone border was recklessly established. The plaque does not provide information about the Spanshügel itself, but rather about the former landwehr fort that runs along the Spanshügel. The pictures are clearly legible.

On the "Der Grenzgänger" hiking trail (formerly the Kolonnenweg) Here is the information board with pictures; the deserted settlement itself is located about 800 meters further to the southeast. It's nice that efforts are being made to ensure that such places are not forgotten. Thank you.
