The northern source of the Franconian Saale rises here. The spring is beautifully framed and there is a nice place to sit there.

Situated in a lake, Brennhausen Castle has a special charm with its two dominant Gothic residential towers. The oldest parts are said to date back to the 13th century.

The small cross marks the summit of the 679 m high Gleichberg.

Dainty, but it serves its purpose

The Franconian Saale is fed by two springs, one in Alsleben, the other in Obereßfeld in Lower Franconia, in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. The Franconian Saale was first mentioned in 716. The name of the river is derived from Indo-European Sal, which means salt, or Salā, for flowing water. The river gave the town of Saal an der Saale its name. It is popularly known as the "Rhoen gutter". The source of the Saxon Saale is at the foot of the Großer Waldstein on the northwestern edge of the Fichtelgebirge, in the municipality of Zell im Fichtelgebirge in Upper Franconia: https://www.komoot.de/highlight/70932

It's freezing cold... spring water, after all... but it's a great way to cool your feet in the summer. Close to the former inner-German border. The spring tap is impressive. A beautiful, well-maintained spot with an information board and a place for a short break in the shade of a tree. We got chatting with a long-distance hiker (European long-distance trail E3/E6).
