An interesting relic from bygone times

A beautiful chapel with a Madonna inside. There are memorial plaques on the walls commemorating the fallen and missing soldiers of both world wars. There are also benches outside for a break.

The market town, which has around 1,000 inhabitants, is located in the east of the Rhön-Grabfeld district, directly on the state border with Thuringia and completely in the Hassberge Nature Park. The opening of the border and reunification were probably the most dramatic events in the community's history in recent decades. The "Road of Half-Timbered Romanticism" runs through the two towns. Holidaymakers will find many historic and listed half-timbered buildings that bear witness to the craftsmanship of our ancestors. The gatehouse from 1718 is particularly worth seeing. Close to the edge of the town to the east was a so-called landwehr with a rampart and ditch. The gatehouse provided entry into the town at the southern entrance. To the east of Trappstadt is the "Altenburg" nature reserve, which covers 307 hectares. There is an extensive forest area with three peaks, the Altenburg (438 m), the Spanshügel (444 m), through which the Bavarian-Thuringian border runs, and the Feuerberg (401 m). Rare species can be found there, such as the purple emperor butterfly or the red-backed shrike.
