The architect and urban planner Bernhard Hermkes (1903 to 1995) is considered a pioneer in the use of concrete in shell construction and folding structures. Because the old Lombard bridge could no longer cope with the increased traffic alone, the New Lombard Bridge was added in 1953 to the north of the old construction.
