The war memorial created by Johannes Schilling was built on October 18, 1877 in honor of the Infantry Regiment (2nd Hanseatic League) No. 76 inaugurated in the Esplanade at Stephansplatz. It is said to commemorate the fallen of the regiment in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.

The sculpture was moved to the "Fontenay" near the Fontenay monument on the Alster corner of Fontenay / Alsterufer in Hamburg-Rotherbaum in 1926.

The monument is surrounded by balustrades and benches. At the center is a group of bronze figures on a bronze base and a red-brown marble base.

The sculpture depicts a collapsed horse with a dying rider, an angel kissing the rider's forehead, and two other lifeless soldiers.

The inscription on a bronze plaque in the base reads: “THE BRAVE SOON MADE THE GRATEFUL TOWN. 1870-1871. ". The names of the fallen are listed on other bronze plaques. Between the bronze plates on the narrow sides are the names of the locations of the battles and their dates (Metz, September 4, 1870, Toul, September 13, 1870, Paris, October 22, 1870, Loigny, December 2, 1870, Meung, December 7, 1870, Beaugency and Cravant 8.9.10 December 1870, Freteval 14 December 1870 and Le Mans 10.11.12 January 1871) chiselled and painted in gold.

Round trips around or on the Inner and Outer Alster as well as walks around the water are very popular with locals and tourists. Sunsets on the Outer Alster give a romantic flair and the adjacent attractions are also worth a visit.
With an impressive size of 164 hectares, the Outer Alster is a popular starting point for walks on all banks. The paths along the water are also popular with joggers and small sailing ships and the Alster steamers do their laps on the water.
The Kennedy and Lombard bridges separate the Outer Alster from the Inner Alster. The Lombard Bridge also marks the old course of the city fortifications. If the path around the Outer Alster seems too arduous despite all the temptations, the small tour around the Inner Alster is preferred.

The Alstersee is a large body of water centrally located in Hamburg, consisting of the inner and outer Alster. There are paths for cycling or hiking around the lake. There are many sailing and excursion boats on the lake. The Outer Alster, as well as the Inner Alster, are definitely worth a visit when you are in Hamburg.
