The Kobolzeller Tor is a powerful fortification that allowed access to the city from the southwest. The Kobolzeller Tor was built in the middle of the 14th century. The gate was named after the small town of Kobolzell, which was located below the gate in the Taubertal. The defense system consists of the gate tower, a rectangular forecourt with a battlement and a large foregate with a customs house. Anyone who has ever come to Rothenburg from the valley, whether on foot or by bike, can imagine how difficult it used to be for enemies to attack the city at this point.

The Klingentor is the northern entrance to the old town and, together with the fortified church of St. Wolfgang built in the outer defensive ring, forms the Klingentor bastion. The Blade Tower, 37 meters high, was previously integrated into the city's water supply. There was an expansion tank in it into which water was pumped up from the Bronnen mill. This water was used to feed some of the Rothenburg fountains.

As early as 1204, an expansion of the city became necessary and the citizens began building a new fortification ring, which still exists today. Among other things, the Kobolzeller Tor, the Siebersturm, the Rödertor with the Röderturm and the Würzburger Tor were built. The buildable area increased threefold. The circumference of the defensive wall increased from 1,400 to 2,400 meters. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothenburg_ob_der_Tauber)

The Topplerschlösschen was built by the mayor of Rothenburg, Heinrich Toppler, in 1388 as a so-called pond house, a special type of permanent house, as a summer house. Heinrich Toppler was the most important mayor of the free imperial city of Rothenburg. From 1373 to 1407 he held this office with interruptions. In 1388 he was elected one of the four captains of the Swabian League of Towns. In 1408, after an intrigue, he was arrested as a traitor and beheaded. Actually living in the town of Rothenburg, Toppler bought the building site for a country seat from the town and built the small palace on it between 1388 and 1440. It was not only used for representation purposes, but also to protect the mills in the Tauber valley, according to the purchase contract for the property. After its ostracism, it fell to the city of Rothenburg. It subsequently belonged to various Rothenburg families, and since 1861 it has been owned by the Boas family, who rented it out as a holiday home until the 1960s.

The Galgentor was built in 1388. It is located at the highest point in the city at 438 m above sea level. Named after the gallows that used to be located in the immediate vicinity and stood here as a symbol of the legal sovereignty of a free imperial city until the beginning of the 19th century, when the city was incorporated into Bavaria. The executioner's house is located in all cities (if they still exist, of course), mostly on the outskirts or outside of the city. Reason: the executioner pursued a "dishonest" activity and was officially not welcomed in society. Also, no one was allowed to touch him! If he did, he too became "dishonest" and was excluded from society. Secretly, people went to him to get medical treatment.
