What looks so beautiful was occupied by a family and a single person until the 1950s. The tower, mentioned in 1405, burned down several times and was restored after a lightning strike in 1927. The executioner, or messenger, never lived in the tower; his official residence was a little house at the Klingentor.
In the period around 1390, Rothenburg had three places of execution, the gallows in front of the Galgentor and the Rabenstein for beheading and the Turmseelein for drowning. There were also executions in the marketplace on special occasions.

The hangman's tower is another part of Rothenburg's weir. Contrary to the obvious assumption, the executioner has never lived here. His office was a cottage on the Klingentor - probably the message was due to the geographical proximity, yet eponym for the tower.
Erected around 1400, the building with its attached dungeon burnt down several times and was restored after a lightning strike in 1927. Today it is used by the German Alps Association for meetings in the two basement levels, while in the upper floors there are training rooms. Climbing can be practiced on the outside of the tower.
