The Klingentor Bastion in Rothenburg ob der Tauber was built in the 14th century as part of the city's fortifications. The Penalty Tower in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a historic tower that served as a prison for criminals who had committed minor offenses. It is located west of the Klingentor and forms the northwest corner of the city fortifications. The tower was built around 1400 and is made of rubble stone with a conical roof. Today, birds and bats find shelter under the conical roof.

At the very top of the outer gable of the city gate there is a large stork's nest, which is currently inhabited.

A moment of shock on August 9, 2023: Flames and a massive column of smoke emerge from one of the city's landmarks, the Nördlingen Gate Tower. The fire was presumably caused by a technical defect. The fire brigade quickly got the fire under control. However, rooms in the museum were destroyed.
