The Klingentor is the northern entrance to the old town and, together with the fortified church of St. Wolfgang built in the outer defensive ring, forms the Klingentor bastion. The blade tower with a height of 37 meters was previously integrated into the city's water supply. It contained an expansion tank into which water from the Bronnen mill was pumped up. A part of the Rothenburg fountain was pissed with this water.

The mighty gate tower built between 1395 and 1400 was built together with the gatehouse and measures a stately 37 meters. Among other things, it served as a water tower until the 19th century and was the terminus of a "high-pressure line" installed in 1594, which led from the Bronnen mill in the Tauber valley high into the city.

In 1587, the adjoining Klingen Bastei was completed as the northernmost gateway to the city and houses the fortified church of St. Wolfgang.

Imposing city gate of the city fortifications of Rothenburg ob de Tauber.

The extensive and massive city fortifications of Rothenburg ob der Tauber also include the blade tower with an integrated blade gate. It is located in the north and was once intended as an entrance to the city. From the tower, which dates back to the 13th century and is 37 meters high, you had a wide view over the Tauber Valley. The tower was once built as a water tower. The water pipe that was laid in 1594 and supplied the city's fountains with water ended here. The name Blade Tower or Blade Gate was given because this tower was built on the narrow gorge that slopes steeply down to the valley. This local occurrence was therefore also called a blade.

A bastion was built in front of the Klingentor around the year 1500. There is the Church of St. Wolfgang, which was built directly onto the tower. In the church there is, among other things, a staircase to the tower, which illustrates the connection between the defensive structure and the sacred building. The church also has embrasures on the north wall and was built at this point with very massive humpback blocks.

Today the entrance through the gate is provided with a stone bridge; previously there was a wooden staircase that also functioned as a drawbridge. This meant that the city could be additionally protected from advancing troops.

The Klingentor Bastion in Rothenburg ob der Tauber was built in the 14th century as part of the city's fortifications. It played an important role in the Thirty Years' War and offered protection from attackers. Today it is an impressive historical landmark that visitors can admire from the outside.

A special feature distinguishes the blade gate: It shares a wall with the church of St. Wolfgang. Defense and sacred buildings are linked in this unique way.

From inside the church, defenders of the city could climb the gate tower and casemates were built under the church to fire on attackers who had already made it into the moat. The tower, which is more than thirty meters high, has served extremely practical purposes since the 16th century: this is where the water pipe laid in 1594 ends, from which the city's tube wells are supplied with water. For this purpose, the blade gate was converted into a water tower with a copper kettle. The Klingentor got its name from the gorge that drops steeply into the valley, which the population has long called “Klinge”.

The Blade Gate was built in the 14th century and is a remarkable example of medieval architecture. The gate tower is the city's main attraction. It rises majestically over the city. A special feature of the Klingentor is the fact that it shares a wall with the Church of St. Wolfgang. The combination of defensive and sacred buildings is unique in this form. This is also reflected in the structure of the gate - the city's defenders could climb the gate tower from the inside of the church.

A visit to St. Wolfgang's Church is definitely a highlight of any city tour. Strongly fortified on the outside, late Gothic and delicate on the inside - this is how the unique fortified church presents itself. It is integrated into the fortifications of the city wall at the Klingentor, defiant and equipped with loopholes.

In the main nave, however, there is an ornate, late Gothic tracery next to three altars from around 1500. The shepherd's dance museum is housed in the gatehouse of the church. Here visitors will find various exhibits on two floors relating to shepherds and shepherd's dance. Sheep farming and the wool trade were of great importance in medieval Rothenburg. This is how St. Wolfgang came into being at the very spot where the shepherds had been looking for protection for their flocks from St. Wolfgang for many years.
