The Buchfarter Felsenburg, located on the steep shell limestone slope of the Illm River, is the only structure of its type in Central Germany and of particular cultural and historical significance. It was originally a castle complex belonging to the Counts of Orlamünde. The cycle path here runs very close to the Gera River. In summer, it's wonderfully shady thanks to its tree-lined setting. The surface ranges from asphalt to gravel, but is easily manageable with any bike. Tip: A little further toward Ichtershausen, you can cycle directly from the cycle path to the edge of the Gera River.
