12월 30, 2025, Buchenwald Memorial Bell Tower
Buchenwald Concentration Camp, officially KL Buchenwald, was one of the largest concentration camps on German soil. It operated as a forced labor camp on the Ettersberg hill near Weimar between July 1937 and April 1945. A total of approximately 277,800 people from 50 countries were imprisoned in Buchenwald during this period.[1] The death toll is estimated at around 56,000, including 15,000 Soviet citizens, 7,000 Poles, 6,000 Hungarians, and 3,000 French citizens.[2] As the 3rd US Army approached on April 11, 1945, the prisoners took control of the camp from the retreating SS, arrested 125 of the guards, opened the gates, and raised a white flag.

A magnificent moated castle that needs some TLC. Definitely worth a photo opportunity.

The moated castle, dating back to the 14th century, is abandoned and falling into disrepair. In 2019, it still served as a hostel.

Everyone should visit a concentration camp to understand the dimensions in which the Nazis herded Jews together and murdered them on a large scale

The Buchenwald concentration camp was operated as a men's concentration camp. It was one of the largest concentration camps in Germany. The inmates had to perform forced labor under inhumane conditions, sometimes until they died. After the end of the Second World War, the concentration camp was continued to be operated by the Russian army as an internment camp for Nazi leaders, some of whom suffered under the same prison conditions as the prisoners during the Third Reich.

The “Tower of Freedom” built from light sandstone and visible from afar – a name that disappeared in the 1970s in favor of the simple “bell tower” – ends the path “through dying and fighting to victory” that the memorial aims to show. In the self-image of the builders, the tower, which is over 50 meters high, represents the GDR's claim to be the better Germany. Inside, under a sealed bronze plate, there is soil and ashes from Nazi concentration camps and terror sites across Europe. Two staircases lead from it to a light-flooded platform. Above it is the Buchenwald bell, which weighs almost 7 tons and is struck every hour.

The lake got its name from the blade, a ditch that temporarily carried water and whose course to the north is clearly visible from the accompanying trees. Two hectares of land have already been reforested between the south bank and Luthersteinweg. The Klingesee, which z. B. by reforestation of bank sections, well integrated into the landscape, should be designed as a recreational lake. Future possible uses include swimming on the northwest bank, surfing, boating and fishing. There could also be a campsite by the lake. Source: http://www.erfurter-seen.de/content/see_klingesee.htm

Everyone should see it to know what terrible atrocities the Nazis committed here. It's crazy that something like this once happened and a reminder so that it shouldn't be allowed to happen again!!!
