After the peat bog was extracted in the 1960s, the Dutch Forestry Commission began the renaturation of what is now the Bargerveen nature reserve. Today, due to its exceptional diversity of flora and fauna, it enjoys special protection as a European bird sanctuary and an important wetland. You can explore the area on approximately 30 kilometers of hiking trails, enjoy panoramic views of the bog from the observation hill and tower, or experience the unique landscape on guided tours and accessible rides on the Veenland Express train.

The water mill was first mentioned in a document in 1270, and a seizure contract from 1377 also mentions a mill in Lage an der Dinkel. However, it was not until around 200 years later that the then King of Spain, Philip II, as ruler of the Netherlands, granted permission to build a mill on the Dinkel. This was probably a reconstruction or an extension of the existing mill, but the exact details are not known.

Great bike paths in beautiful nature

Along the well-developed bike path you will find signs (also in German) about the houses that stood on the Laardijk until about the middle of the last century and their inhabitants, some with photos.

The Bargerveen are a beautiful nature reserve. A former peat region, but now nature can recover. Many different bird species and snakes (e.g. adders) can be observed there. And there are wonderfully developed hiking/biking trails through the heath/peat landscape. We recommend!
