If you cross the old Jeetzel River, you'll get to the other side. It's okay to walk, but I'd prefer to drive a bit further, where you can easily cross over a road bridge.

I grew up in Hitzacker and in my time up until 1969, the old town hall was in the old half-timbered building to the left of the ice cream parlor on the market square. The post office was downstairs and the town administration was upstairs. I always had to pay the annual dog tax there. But then in 1973 I moved from Hitzacker to the wide world for work - it's possible that the town administration had to move due to lack of space.

The wooden bridge "Hiddosteg", named after the Frisian knight Hiddo Kauchen, is approx. 40 m away from the Hitzacker harbor and leads you from the hotel "Hafen Hitzacker" with beautiful views over the Jetzel to the historic old town island with half-timbered houses and cozy cafés. https://www.deutschland-navigator.de/hotel-hitzacker-elbe-323413.html

Darchau ferry

Hitzacker's old town (on the town island) lies between the Jeetzel and Elbe rivers and is always worth a visit. There are some pretty, old half-timbered houses to see here. You can get a wonderful view of the town island and the Elbe from the vineyard, which is on the opposite (western) side of the Jeetzel from the old town. On the northern side of the town island there is a flood protection wall, behind which lies Hitzacker's marina and meadows about 120-150 meters wide, behind which the Elbe flows.
