The former border watchtower south of Boizenburg was once part of the GDR border security regime and stood at a checkpoint/crossing on the Elbberg. It was part of the five-kilometer exclusion zone, through which residents were only allowed to enter with a pass; the tower served to observe and control passenger and freight traffic. Today, it is preserved and incorporated into the Elbberg Museum in Boizenburg as a memorial to the inner-German border.

Whether you're sunbathing on the dike, playing in the beach area or swimming in the Elbe - the proximity to nature and the freedom that this place offers are unique. The Elbe bank landscape near Stiepelse is a testimony to the harmonious coexistence of people and nature. It is a place that shows how valuable and enriching simply cycling along the river can be. Here you will not only find a breathtaking view and a welcome break on the journey, but also a piece of living history and culture.

The river covers almost 1,100 kilometers from the source of the Elbe in the Giant Mountains to its mouth in the North Sea. Since the cycle path does not always follow the banks of the Elbe, the Elbe cycle path is approx. 1,270 kilometers long. Not only is this section beautiful 🤫 and it is also important to ask “upstream or downstream” 👍
