The Kaiserweg (Emperor's Way) stretches for approximately 100 kilometers from Bad Harzburg via Walkenried and Nordhausen to Tilleda in the Kyffhäuser Mountains. It runs primarily along the mountain ridges – from the northern to the southern Harz Mountains. The trail is named after Emperor Henry IV, who fled from the Saxons at Harzburg Castle in 1074 and sought refuge in the monasteries of the southern Harz Mountains and in the small town of Tilleda. There are also additional trails, known as the "Paths of German Emperors and Kings of the Middle Ages in the Harz Mountains." a wonderfully presented area of the old imperial palace / Werlaburg. The site is relatively large and has numerous information boards on the history of the castle and the earth. A visit is worthwhile, but you should plan a little time, because the history is very extensive.
