From the Saar loop it is actually nice, before that it is rather uninspiring. And the loop is really nice, even if you've seen it so often in pictures ... If you don't want to cycle up the mountain, there is a hiking trail straight from the river.

Montclair Castle is a medieval castle ruin near Mettlach, a municipality in the Merzig-Wadern district. In the Middle Ages, the castle was one of the most important fortifications on the lower Saar and served to control the river as a traffic artery. Wikipedia

Steinbachtal The one square kilometer Steinbachtal west of the Saarschleife has been one of the nature reserves of the Saarland since October 1991. It is characterized by ravine-like rock formations, playful streams and mossy forest floor.

A little away from the hustle and bustle of the Saar loop, treetop path and visitor center, the Steinbachtal offers a leisurely hiking trail through the forest with some rock faces and watercourses. The Steinbachtalweg allows you to easily overcome the height difference between the banks of the Saar and the Cloef lookout point.
