Montclair Castle has a small snack bar (in the courtyard) where you can enjoy coffee and cake. There's also a restroom and plenty of seating and tables where you can also eat your own food. However, you have to pay an entrance fee to access the top of the castle and the tower.

The mountain was already used for protection from the invading Teutons in Roman times in the 3rd and 4th centuries. The mountain was built on for the first time with a Celtic refuge.
The Montclair Castle was completed at the same time as the sister castle Meinsberg in Manderen in 1439.
After the builder's death in 1455, the castle was no longer looked after, with the exception of renovations between 1581 and 1583. It remained uninhabited. In the warlike days of the 17th century, Montclair was hardly mentioned again. In 1621 the castle was largely in ruins.
In 1833, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV, known as a romantic, visited the Montclair ruins and ordered the castle to be restored.

In 1870 the castle became the property of the privy councilor Eugen von Boch. Eugen von Boch wanted to continue the renovation work as well as on the "Old Tower" in Mettlach.
The castle was under fire in 1945 when German soldiers stationed themselves on the castle tower for defense. The battlements of the higher tower were destroyed. Likewise the connecting bridges between the towers.
In 1991, the von Boch family left the Montclair castle ruins to the Merzig-Wadern district.

The castle is on winter break from November 4, 2019 to April 3, 2020.

Very nice castle. However, it is currently only open for tours from Thursday to Sunday. And unfortunately does not have an innkeeper at the moment. So if you are planning a tour you should inform yourself beforehand.

Montclair Castle is a medieval castle ruin near Mettlach, a municipality in the Merzig-Wadern district. In the Middle Ages, the castle was one of the most important fortifications on the lower Saar and served to control the river as a traffic artery.

The castle Montclaire stands on the ridge exactly in the Saar loop. From the viewpoint Cloef you have a good view of the location. Unfortunately, the castle is closed until the end of June 2019 due to renovations.

Beautiful little castle ruins, where there is all sorts of things to discover. From the top of the tower you can even discover the Cloef and the Orscholz treetop path.
On the inner square you are welcome to have something to eat, drink or use the toilets.
If you want to see the museum or climb up to the castle, you pay an entrance fee of 2 euros, which is justified.
