The existence of the village Birresborn was documented for the first time in 721. The name "Birgisburias" can be translated as "good source". Numerous finds in the area of the source evidence that this source was already known to the Romans. The Linden source is located on the ''Kyllradweg'', directly at the L24.

The blast crater visible to this day is one of the largest man-made. A memorial cross on Calvary commemorates the victims of the catastrophe. https://de.wikipedia.org

When the West Wall was being built in 1939, a Wehrmacht standby bunker was built in Calvary. The Hohlgangbunker was 20 to 30 meters deep under the hilltop and consisted of a 100 and a 60 meter long tunnel. After the Second World War, the French occupying army deposited 500 tons of ammunition there, which was to be used to blow up the West Wall fortifications. On July 15, 1949 there was a fire in the bunker. The Prüm volunteer fire brigade raised the alarm shortly before 7 p.m. and tried to extinguish the fire, but could not penetrate the deep tunnel to the source of the fire. It was still possible to retreat in time and evacuate large parts of the population from Prüm, which saved many lives. At around 8:22 p.m. the ammunition depot exploded. 250,000 m³ of stones, earth and bunker debris were thrown into the air and fell on Prüm. Twelve people were killed, 15 people injured, 965 people were left homeless. The water supply collapsed, the telephone lines and some of the road connections were completely destroyed. The hospital, school and post office, as well as numerous residential buildings, lay in ruins. The blast crater was 190 × 90 meters in size and over 20 meters deep. The explosion was even registered by seismic stations. Source: https://www.pruem.de/nextshopcms/show.asp?lang=de&e1=2&ssid=1&docid=2&newsid=416

The Basilica of St. Salvator stands in Prüm, a town in the West Eifel region. In 721, the Frankish noblewoman Bertrada founded a monastery on her estate on the Prüm River with monks from Echternach. A second foundation was established in 752 by King Pippin, who had married a granddaughter of the first founder, with monks from Meaux near Paris, who lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict. In 1222, the monastery became the center of an independent principality, which was annexed by the Elector of Trier in 1576. The Elector and Archbishop of Trier then served as the abbot's administrator. Reconstruction of the abbey buildings began in 1721. As part of the Napoleonic secularization, the abbey was finally dissolved in 1802. Prüm, which initially belonged to the original parish of Rommersheim, was under the pastoral care of the Marienstift (St. Mary's Collegiate Church) from the mid-15th century. The Marienstift had been founded in 1016 by Abbot Urold of Prüm. The collegiate church became the parish church. In 1802, the monastery church became the parish church, and the collegiate church was demolished in 1826.

When you enter the Birresborn Ice Caves, the cold comes first. For centuries the so-called "ice caves" were used as ice storage facilities, even in hot summers the temperature does not rise above 7 degrees. Just one of many possible uses over time. The history of the caves as a mining site for coveted millstones is still recognizable today. The millstones were used nationwide to grind oak bark, which was then used as a tannin in leather processing. From quarry to refuge, the caves became a haven during World War II and other times of need. Today bats use the caves as winter quarters, so for nature conservation reasons the ice caves in Birresborn are only open from April to October. Tip: sturdy shoes and a flashlight are recommended for visiting the caves. https://www.gerolsteiner-land.de/a-birresborner-eishoehlen-1

The ice caves were not created naturally, but rather through the mining of millstones. That is why they are also known as "millstone caves" and have been a listed building since 1938. The temperature inside the caves is constantly between -1 ° C and + 4 ° C, so that the icicles and columns of the winter months often persist into summer. The ice caves serve as winter quarters for numerous bats. According to Section 39 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, the bat protection period begins on October 1st and ends on March 31st. During this period, bats are legally prohibited from entering caves, grottos, bunkers, tunnels and other potential hibernation dwellings. That is why the ice caves are closed in winter. If you want to go a little deeper into the caves, you should definitely bring a flashlight. It is worth it!

The church of Saint Salvator - dedicated to Jesus Christ, the Savior - in the city of Prüm bears the papal honorary title "Basilica". As the abbey church of the Prüm Abbey - which at the time was part of the empire - it had been of great importance for a long time, which is also documented in a valuable donation of relics: the "Sandals of Christ". We modern people may perhaps smile mildly today about such a relic - and especially the importance that was attached to it back then - but in the Middle Ages the possession of it had a great external impact and contributed significantly to the attractiveness of the pilgrimage destination Prüm, similar to later times for example the “Heilige Rock” in Trier.

The Lindenquelle is located in the Vulkaneifel, about four kilometers from Birresborn, on the road to Gerolstein. It springs from a spring pavilion. The fountain house in neoclassical style has a round-arched entrance and eight rectangular window openings and a slate-covered pointed roof with a roof finial. Inside, a staircase leads down into the fountain basin. The water from the Lindenquelle can be drunk free of charge all year round
