Architectural historical investigations have concluded that the Upper Gate was built between 1254 and 1267. Until the siege of Ahrweiler by troops of the Cologne Archbishop Rupert of the Palatinate in 1474, the Upper Gate was a three-wall gate, i.e. open to the city, as is the Bitzenturm not far away today. It was not until around 1500 that an inner wall was built into the Upper Gate; the seams can still be seen with the naked eye today.
