From Gutenfels Castle, the view opens up into the Blüchertal valley; on the slopes we see Peter's Riesling and the new PIWI wine Hibernal.

Impressive former customs castle, which stands on an island in front of Kaub. Visible from far away from the Rheinsteig.

9월 18, 2024, Views of the Rhine and Pfalzgrafenstein Castle from the Rheinsteig Trail (Lorch to Kaub)
A beautiful stage of the "Rheinsteig" with many great views of the Rhine, the vineyards, the villages... But be careful when climbing from Lorch to the "Nollig Ruin". Here it goes up very steeply on rocky ground and although the ascent (or descent, if you walk the route from Kaub) is partially secured with steel cables and iron steps, I would only walk this when it is dry and not in the rain.

The view from the "Rheinsteig" to the "Pfalzgrafenstein" is beautiful and the castle also looks very good from near Kaub.

Gutenfels Castle is a spur castle on a rocky spur 200 m above sea level, 110 meters above the town of Kaub in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is a rare, well-preserved example of Staufian castle construction. Gutenfels Castle was built as Kaub Castle (Cube) from 1220, perhaps on behalf of the empire. It was besieged unsuccessfully by William of Holland as early as 1252. In 1277, the Lords of Falkenstein transferred the castle and town of Kaub to the Count Palatine as a fief. By 1289, they had sold their properties in and around Kaub, including the castle, to Count Palatine Ludwig. In the 14th century, the ring wall was built and the attack side was provided with a kennel. At the same time, the plateau of the western outer bailey was built. After Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse unsuccessfully besieged the castle for 39 days in 1504, Elector Ludwig the Peaceful of the Palatinate renamed it Gutenfels. He had it restored and expanded in 1508 (southern Zwinger). There are speculations that the Weisel rampart is linked to this siege. The rondel with a cellar in the west dates from the time of the Thirty Years' War. During this time the castle was conquered several times, most recently in 1647 by Hesse-Kassel troops. Handed over to the French without a fight in 1793, it was quartered by an invalid garrison until 1804. In 1806 it passed to the Duchy of Nassau and was auctioned off for demolition in 1807. After Friedrich Gustav Habel bought the ruins in 1833 and saved them from further decay, they were rebuilt in the course of the castle renaissance in the years 1889-1892 according to plans by the Cologne architect Gustav Walter, who had bought them from Habel in 1888, whereby the original building structure and the ruin character were largely preserved. In 1909 it was owned by Duke Heinrich Borwin of Mecklenburg, from 1911 by the industrialist and privateer Josef Massenez, from 1935 by the manufacturer Georg Edel of Schüttorf, from 1952 by the former mining councilor Werner Dubusque, who had them renovated, and from 1959 by the Rei-Werke Boppard. On December 31, 2006, the castle became private property and was extensively renovated. Source: Wikipedia

During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1713) the Pfalzgrafenstein was used as a prison for prisoners of war. During this time, the roofs of the castle were in danger of collapsing, so that the tower got its current baroque lantern hood in 1714. The fact that the Pfalzgrafenstein remained undestroyed is mainly due to its rich customs revenues. These flowed into the French treasury during the French siege from 1806 to 1813. Gutenfels Castle above the town of Kaub was not so fortunate, as it was destroyed in 1805 on Napoleon's orders.

The Palatinate near Kaub, sometimes incorrectly called the Rhine Palatinate or Pfalzburg, is actually called Pfalzgrafenstein. The island castle on the Weisenau cliff could serve much better as a toll tower in the middle of the river, since Gutenfels Castle was far too far from the shore. Ludwig the Bavarian (1314-1347), the Count Palatine near the Rhine and later German-Roman Emperor, had a toll tower built in a surprising action between August 1326 and July 1327. At the same time, the customs office in Kaub, where the duty was collected, was to be secured. In contrast to most other castles and palaces on the Rhine, the Pfalzgrafenstein was built exclusively for economic reasons: it always served as a base for customs collection. Lying on an island in the middle of the Rhine, this function is also evident from the location. Anger even reached the Pope when the wine boatmen of the monasteries and prelates had to pay duty to the Count Palatine. Today it is hard to imagine that the ships between Mainz and Cologne had to stop at twelve customs posts. The medieval customs castle rises up from the middle of the Rhine like a stone ship and provided a good source of income for various feudal lords for several centuries. However, Pfalzgrafenstein was not the actual customs station, as ships could not dock there. The task of his crew was to spot the ships and to ask them to stop with a trumpeter

In order to secure customs revenue, the Rhenish Count Palatine Ludwig II first built the pentagonal tower on the island in 1327 (construction may have started as early as 1326). From 1339 to 1342, the twelve meter high and up to 2.60 meter thick ring wall with a covered battlement was added. In addition, the castle has a dungeon, the floor of which was raised as a raft when the water was high. In the second half of the 15th century, the tower was probably increased with a half-timbered building, corner towers and saddle roof to protect the customs revenue. Due to permanent damage from ice drift, a massive spire was added to the building on the upstream side in 1606/1607 and reinforced with iron brackets; this gives the castle the impression of a battleship floating on the Rhine. The conversion was used to build a gun platform on this tip, which corresponded to the weapon technology of the time. A second one was built under the upper parapet walkway, which is equipped with loopholes for handguns. In 1658, bay windows were added to flank the walls. The castle got its current appearance when the baroque tower helmet was put on in 1714. The tower thus reached a height of 36 meters

Since its construction in 1327, the castle near Kaub has been enthroned on a rocky reef in the middle of the Bacharacher Engtal, where the Rhine has also been called "Wild Danger" or "Wild Ride" since the 15th century. As a guard station, it secured the Kauber toll - a lucrative source of income for its various feudal lords. Pfalzgrafenstein Castle can only be reached from Kaub by passenger ferry.
