The steep hiking trail winds its way up to Maus Castle via several switchbacks. And from there, it climbs a good bit further. The effort is rewarded by absolutely breathtaking viewpoints.

We were there at the end of April, and the many different shades of green were somewhat reminiscent of Galicia. Please note that there are hardly any trash cans along the way, so please take your trash with you. There is a wine shop below the castle.

The value and significance of the Marksburg lie primarily in its complete preservation as a medieval fortification. For many visitors it is the epitome of a medieval castle. Its exposed location on a rocky cone 90 meters above the town of Braubach contributes to this. The imposing fortress with buildings mainly from the 13th to 15th centuries is staggered with a keep, several buildings, kennels and bastions. The typical interior rooms such as the castle kitchen, knights' hall, bower, chapel, armory, wine cellar, battlements and tower rooms are particularly worth seeing. They provide insights into medieval life.

The way up is easy to walk

On the wide castle driveway you can quickly get up to the Maus

The path winds up the mountain, first in wide and then in narrow serpentines. It is pleasant to walk as it is not that steep.

You can reach the vantage point either via a steep climb from St. Goarshausen or via an easy footpath from Patersberg. There you can park your car at the bus stop turning point and enjoy the view after a few hundred meters without much effort.

From the pavilion you have a wonderful view of Katz Castle to the left, Rheinfels Castle diagonally opposite on the left bank of the Rhine and Maus Castle with its transmission mast to the right.
