The gatehouse is currently being renovated (August 2025). It's wrapped like a work of art by Vhristo. But it's still very impressive.

Just attack!

From Kronsforde to Krummesse, the route is on the finest asphalt through forests and fields. Gentle climbs and long descents on a rolling road profile. There were no cars on the road when I rode it (it was a weekday morning).

I prefer riding on old railway lines. The surface is perfect and always flat. :D

In spring the beautiful blossoms, in summer the trees are full of fruit and in late summer it smells of overripe windfall.

The estate, built in 1889, is located in the idyllic village of Trenthorst. It has been federal property for several years. The Thünen Institute for Organic Agriculture conducts research into current ecological issues and advises the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. The history of the Wulmenau estate begins in the 14th century. It is mentioned as a Marquart von Crumesse, who sold it to a Lübeck councillor. In 1555 it was united with the Trenthorst estate through marriage and from 1594 onwards it was placed under the protection of the Lübeck council as the "Lübsches Gut". In 1660 the Trenthorst and Wulmenau estates were elevated to noble estates and were from then on owned by noble families. At the end of the 19th century they came into the possession of wealthy officials and factory owners. In 1936 the double estate became the private property of the cigarette manufacturer Philipp F. Reemtsma, who brought the estate, which was then heavily in debt, back to prosperity. After the end of the war, parts of the estate were separated or settled. The remaining core parts of the Trenthorst-Wulmenau double estate (approx. 660 ha) were transferred to the Max Planck Society in 1951 and were subsequently used by various state institutions. Since 2008 it has been home to the Thünen Institute, which is part of the business area of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The wealthy Hamburg merchant and oil manufacturer Friedrich Thörl was the owner of the Trenthorst-Wulmenau double estate from 1910 to 1928. He started a modernization that was unique for rural areas. He had an infrastructure center built between the two estates, which was henceforth referred to as the "central center". A power station for the electrical power supply was built, a water tower with a wind turbine and pumping station for the water supply, as well as new buildings for the forestry office, dairy and smithy. In 1912/13, a two-class school with an attached gymnasium and teacher's residence was built. The school was not closed until the early 1970s. The name "Old School" remained.
